Science (Week of Sept 7th): We are comparing and contrasting writing in science vs. language arts. Then we will steer back to scientific method and away from hot dogs. Yippee!!
Math (Week of Sept 7th): Please encourage nightly practice of multiplication (Mon & Tues) and division (Wed & Thurs) math facts. It makes a significant difference in their accuracy and processing speed. This week we will continue our study of place value, including whole numbers and decimals.

Important Information:
“The Dog Days of Summer” Reading List – 6th Grade
St. Clare of Assisi School
At St. Clare, we believe that reading is one of the fundamental skills that our students need to develop in order to be successful. This summer, you are asked to (1) read a required novel and (2) choose from the personal choice novel options below.
1.) Choose ONE of these three REQUIRED novels:
Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls
Old Yeller, by Fred Gibson
Shiloh, by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Mrs. Walker has some copies of Where the Red Fern Grows and Old Yeller that are available for summer checkout. Otherwise you can purchase the books through a local bookseller, or check them out from your local library.
*** We will begin the school year by reviewing your novel. Please read the required novel and remember major themes and events from this novel. Be prepared to take a written test in the fall!
2.) Find one book from the following list that you have not read and complete the reading assignment:
A. You must pick 20 words from the novel that you do not know, and write a definition and a sentence for each one.
B. After reading the book, write a summary of the entire novel which includes the main events in the beginning, middle, and end. This summary should not be more than five sentences.
C. Include what the problem is and how it was resolved.
List:
Bridge to Terabithia, by Katherine Paterson
The Black Stallion, by Walter Farley
A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle
The View From Saturday, E.L. Konigsburg

Religion:
Dear Parents,
The theme of sixth grade religion is the Seven Sacraments! This week the students have read the first two chapters of Genesis--the creation stories. We have discussed the nature of the angels and the fall of the devil. We have discussed the creation of man and what it means that God created us in His image and likeness. Next week we will discuss the fall of man and our need for grace and salvation through Jesus Christ. All of this is in preparation for understanding our need for the Sacraments and the supernatural strength they give us to truely love God and our neighbor.
Have a wonderful weekend!
