Dear Parents,
This week we rolled out our new programs, St. Clare of Assisi Student Leadership Council and Awards. Each fifth grader has a document that explains the philosophy and procedures. The embodiment of true leadership through service and respect, reverence, and responsibility is the mission of our program and our school. Please ask your son or daughter what the Three R's might look like in our daily life at St. Clare's.
Dear Parents,
The 5th Grade Readers and Writers are off to a strong start. This week began our third short story, "Yang the Third and Her Impossible Family", by Lensey Namioka.
1. Creative Writing Kicked-Off our week! On Tuesday we wrote shape poems and haikus. Ask your child if they can teach you the rules for writing a haiku. On Wednesday we will tackle the limerick. Thursday and Friday will give the writers time to select their best efforts, proof, peer-edit, and share with the class.
2. Reading strategies taught and practiced to date include the Post-It Process and Double Entry Journals. Our third reading strategy this week is a Venn Diagram.
2. Already completed assignments that you will see reflected in two week's time on mygradebook include a comprehension test for "Hot Summer, Cold Summer," a grammar assignment and spelling assignment, both connected to the story, and an overall grade given to the students for work completed to date in their D.O.L. journals. A rubric that explains the D.O.L. grade is attached to their journal for frequent reference. For the week of 9/7 - 9/10, please expect a reading comprehension score for "Sees Behind Trees," and a score for a completed descriptive paragraph. (pre-writing, writing, revising, and sharing are all steps included in the rubric.)
3. As we acclimate to the new year, schedule, and class shifts, homework will be limited to self-selected outside reading books both last and this week. When your child has finished their outside reading book, please have them complete the Book Report Poster Project that will come home with them on 9/1/10. Students will finish their books at varying times, but all posters need to be turned in (and outside books finished) by 10/1/10.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for sharing your children with us!

5th Grade Religion
Dear Parents,
The Seven Sacraments are the main theme of our studies in religion this year! The fifth grade has begun with the story of creation from Genesis chapters 1 and 2 and will continue next week with the fall of man and the need for grace and salvation through Jesus Christ. All of this will prepare us to better understand why we need the Sacraments and the great gift they are to us.
Also, as is tradition at St. Clare, the fifth grade students will be working to research the life of a saint to present to the school after our school Mass the week of All Saints Day. More information to come soon!
Have a wonderful week!
Sister Mary Andrea, RSM

Ms B:
Math (Week of Sept 7th): Please encourage nightly practice of multiplication (Mon & Tues) and division (Wed & Thurs) math facts. It makes a significant difference in their accuracy and processing speed. This week we will continue our study of place value.
Thank you for supporting our mathematicians!!
**Written assignments should be on loose-leaf paper, in cursive, and using erasable pen.**

5th Reading/L.A.
Dear Parents,
The 5th Grade Readers and Writers are off to a strong start. We have read one short story, "Hot Summer, Cold Summer" and this week began our second, "Sees Behind Trees," by Michael Dorris. (His name might ring as bell as the author of Yellow Raft in Blue Water.)
Reading strategies taught and practiced to date include the Post-It Process and Double Entry Journals.
Already completed assignments that you will see reflected in two week's time on mygradebook include a comprehension test for "Hot Summer, Cold Summer," a grammar assignment and spelling assignment, both connected to the story, and an overall grade given to the students for work completed to date in their D.O.L. journals.
